Cheong Wa Dae on Thursday said that Choi Soon-sil, President Park Geun-hye’s aide at the center of controversy, should return from overseas so as to clear the allegations on her meddling in state affairs.

The office, however, has maintained silence over possible follow-up measures from the president, especially as to whether she would carry out an overhaul of the Cabinet, which includes Senior Presidential Secretary for Civil Affairs Woo Byung-woo, who has been closely intertwined in Choi’s corruption scandal.

“The people are in great shock and (Choi) should return (to Korea) in order to clear the doubts,” presidential spokesperson Jung Youn-kuk told reporters.

His remark came in response to an exclusive interview by Segye Ilbo earlier in the morning in which Choi claimed to be going through a nervous breakdown, saying she was unable to return home immediately.

Responding to another report from JTBC the previous day saying a tablet computer abandoned by Choi was registered in the name of a Cheong Wa Dae official, the spokesperson said that “the matter requires further verification.”
