[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics’ presence in the global mobile DRAM market marked a record high in the second quarter, data showed Aug. 17, apparently helped by increased orders from smartphone-makers, particularly from China.

According to data compiled by industry tracker DRAMeXchange, Samsung Electronics accounted for 61.5 percent of the mobile DRAM market in the April-June period, up 1.1 percentage point from the previous quarter.

Samsung sold US$2.42 billion worth of mobile DRAM in the second quarter, also up 19.4 percent from three months earlier, the data showed.

Fellow South Korean chipmaker SK hynix followed with a market share of 25.1 percent in the second quarter, with sales of $988 million, trailed by the U.S.’ Micron with 11.4 percent.

The data showed that global mobile DRAM revenue grew 17.2 percent in the second quarter, benefiting the top three DRAM suppliers. Expanding Chinese-branded smartphone shipments, driven by Huawei, OPPO and Vivo, as well as bit supply growth in the mobile DRAM market, attributed to the revenue increase, DRAMeXchange said.
