Swimming on Busan’s Haeundae beach was put on hold for 50 minutes on Monday after floating oil was detected on the water surface.

A thin layer of oil, presumed to have leaked from a ship embarked nearby the beach, covered an area 100-meters in length and 10-meters in width between the first and the second watchtower.

After the discovery at 6:35 a.m., the maritime police dispatched nine boats and water motorcycles to remove the oil by 9:45 a.m.

The beach, originally slated to open to the public from 9:00 a.m., delayed the entrance for 50 minutes.

The maritime police estimated that approximately 10 liters of oil was spilled and is tracking down the source from where it leaked.
