[THE INVESTOR] Hyundai Heavy Industries will have idle docks from the second half of 2017 due to the shortage of orders, the company’s chairman Choi Kil-seon said on July 27.

In an open letter to the employees, Choi said that work is dwindling across the board, and called on the union to call off its strike.

“Some of the docks becoming idle will be a reality from the second half of next year,” Choi said.

“From September, the company and the union must make an all-out effort to win contracts. We must first make ship owners trust us.”

Saying that a company suffering from labor dispute would not be trusted by potential customers, Choi said that the HHI union’s strike in concert with Hyundai Motor’s union was meaningless.

The HHI chairman also said that the management has admitted to its faults with those responsible leaving, and that the company must first focus on the future.
