The South Korean film industry is tapping into the emerging Southeast Asia market by carrying out joint projects and engaging in technological exchanges, a state-run cultural institution said Sunday.

The Korean Film Council, a Busan-based state-funded movie promotion agency, said it participated in a global networking event in Vietnam from June 22 to 24, that will allow it to expand the realm of local cinema.

Dubbed "2016 K-Cinema Global Networking in Vietnam," the three-day event drew movie marketers and related industry players from South Korea and Vietnam to Ho Chi Minh City.

The event consisted of corporate showcases of film-related products, face-to-face business meetings and Korea-Vietnam forum for the development of film industries, on the sideline of other networking events.

The event led to some tangible gains, according to KOFIC. In the business meeting session, two Vietnamese filmmaking companies offered South Korean companies a joint movie-producing project, the South Korean agency said.

Some South Korean visual effects makers, including Macrograph and Digital Idea Corp., separately discussed deals with Vietnamese companies to jointly produce computer graphic content.

Macrograph participated in "Roaring Current," the most viewed movie in South Korean film history.

Under Digital Idea's belt is the second most viewed "Ode to My Father."

Two South Korean animated filmmakers, SAMG Animation Studio and OCON Animation Studio, meanwhile, plan to outsource works to Vietnamese companies after a test period.

Following the completion of the Vietnamese global event, the KOFIC has lined up another film industry gathering in Jakarta that will run for Aug. 10-12.

The Indonesian international film gathering will follow similar format and agendas as the Vietnamese event, a KOFIC official said. (Yonhap)
