Foreigners invest more in South Korean stocks in April

Foreign investors bought a net 2 trillion won ($1.7 billion) worth of South Korean stocks last month, the country’s financial regulator said Monday.

Foreigners continued to stand as net buyers for Korean stocks for a second consecutive month in April. Their accumulated holdings of local stocks was valued at 432.8 trillion won, or 29 percent of the country‘s total market capitalization, the Financial Supervisory Service said in a statement.

The FSS said foreign investors appeared to become attracted to Korean stocks based on expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve is unlikely to raise rates too much this year.

The watchdog also said foreigners bought 600 billion won worth of local bonds in April after scooping up the same amount of bonds the previous month. Their accumulated bond holdings reached 98 trillion won, or 6.1 percent of the total bonds traded in the KRX’s bond market.
