Hyundai Motor, Korea's leading automaker, has sold more than 4 million cars in India since its advance into the market about 20 years ago, industry data showed Tuesday.
Hyundai Motor opened its local corporate body in India in 1995, with its first plant there going into operation in 1998. It opened a second plant in 2008, which raised its annual production capacity to 650,000 units.
According to the data, Hyundai Motor's cumulative car sales in India surpassed the 4 million mark in November last year. Last month, the sales rose to 4.22 million units.
Hyundai Motor climbed to second place in terms of local sales in India in 1999, when it sold 6,321 cars, which represented 11.6 percent of auto sales in the country. Its annual sales there have been on the steady rise, and they broke the 400,000 unit mark for the first time in 2014.
Hyundai Motor currently produces a total of 10 models at its two Indian plants, including the Eon, i20, Elantra, Santa Fe and Creta.
Of the production there, about 40 percent are shipped overseas. The data showed that Hyundai Motor has exported a cumulative 2.36 million cars manufactured at its plants in India. (Yonhap)
