South Korea's top automaker Hyundai Motor Co. took up three out of the top 10 best-selling import cars in Germany, industry data showed Saturday, reflecting its robust sales in the European market.

According to the data compiled by the German Association of the Automotive Industry, Hyundai sold 2,116 units of Tucson, a sport utility vehicle in the country last month, which ranked third after the Nissan Qashqai and the Fiat 500.

The Hyundai Tucson, which first reached the European market in the second half of 2015, has been one of the major contributors to the firm's earnings amid the soaring popularity of sports utility vehicles there.

Hyundai's i10 took the fifth spot with 1,526 units, followed by the i30, ranked ninth, by shipping 1,470 units, the data also showed.

"The German market is challenging for overseas brands as local firms account for 70 percent of the share," an official from Hyundai Motor said. "It is significant that Hyundai took up three of the top 10 import automobiles."

The company said it sold 7,279 units of cars in Germany last month, up 11 percent from a year earlier.

In South Korea, three of Mercedes-Benz models were among the top-10 import automobiles in February, trailed by Volkswagen and BMW, which put two on the list, respectively.
