McDonald’s on Thursday appointed Melanie Joh as the managing director of its Korean unit.

Joh is the first woman to lead the Korean unit of the world’s largest fast-food franchise and is also the first person to have been promoted within McDonald’s Korea ― she was previously executive vice president of marketing.

Joh will replace Jeo Erlinger, who was promoted as chief financial officer of the American fast-food giant’s high-growth markets.

The company noted that Joh has fixed several innovative platforms and menus into the service, which have attributed to McDonald’s Korea’s being selected by the global headquarters as one of the two Asian countries, alongside China, to join the prestigious “High-Growth Market” club.

“I will try to provide the best food and services to people visiting our stores, based on my experience and knowledge for the Korean market and its consumers,” Joh said.

Joh graduated from Ewha Womans University, gained a master’s degree from Korea University and received her doctorate from Illinois Institute of Technology.

She started her career at LG Electronics, then worked for Motorola and Haworth before joining McDonald’s in 2011.
