South Korean archer Ki Bo-bae set a world record at the preliminary for the women's individual recurve archery competition at the Summer Universiade on Saturday.

Ki shot a combined 686 points out of a possible 720, including 42 10s of which 14 were bull's-eyes, bettering the record set by Park Sung-hyun in 2004 by four points.

South Koreans hogged the top three spots in the preliminary.

Kang Chae-young shot 679 points and Choi Mi-sun followed with 673 points.

The trio combined for a group world record of 2,038 points, beating the previous one also set by South Korea at the 2014 Archery World Cup by six points.

South Korea also dominated the preliminary round of the men's individual recurve archery.

Lee Seung-yun set the Universiade record of 693 points. Two other South Koreans -- Ku Bon-chan and Kim Woo-jin -- came in second and third with 686 points and 683 points, respectively.

Fifty-eight women and 68 men from 29 and 32 countries, respectively, entered Saturday's ranking rounds, which took place at the Gwangju International Archery Center in Gwangju, the host city some 330 kilometers south of Seoul.

The top eight players will advance to the round of 16 matches slated for Monday. The rest will have to start from the round of 48 on Sunday.

Winners of both team and individual recurve archery will be determined Wednesday. (Yonhap)
