On Wednesday, April 15, the Gwangju 2015 Universiade Organizing Committee (GUOC) was invited to a special event to celebrate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) at the United Nations headquarters. The organizing committee had a special segment to promote the upcoming games and invite United Nations ambassadors to the Universiade Gwangju 2015, which will be held from July 3 to 14.
GUOC Secretary General KIM Yoon-suk presents the Universiade Gwangju 2015 at the 2nd International Day of Sport for Development and Peace on April 15 at the UN headquarters.
In August 2013, the General Assembly established April 6 as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace with the key objective to cooperate, observe, and raise awareness with the international community and potential to improve societies.
Since the year 2015 is the deadline for the Millenium Development Goals, IDSDP has become a platform to discuss and adopt the Post-2015 Development Agenda where sport can be used to create a sustainable and prosperous future for all. The Universiade Gwangju 2015 and post-2015 share a common goal to make the world a better place through sports.
A thirty minute special segment for the Universiade Gwangju 2015 was arranged at the three hour event where key figures from the international sporting community, including United Nations Secreatary General BAN Ki-moon and International Olympic Committee President Thomas BACH took part.
Since 2012, the Gwangju and UN have worked in close collaboration to embody the value of ‘Sport for Development’ with the EPIC (Eco, Peace, IT, Culture) vision of the Universiade Gwangju 2015.
The organizing committee presented a short video and promoted the EPIC Universiade. Throughout the segment, Gwangju received a positive reaction from the participants.
“As the city of Gwangju is known for democracy, peace, and human rights, the 2015 Summer Universiade will flourish in peace with the city’s dedication and support.” said KIM Yoon-suk, Secretary General of the Gwangju Universiade, in his commemoration speech.
GUOC Secretary General KIM Yoon-suk passed the Universiade torch to UN Secreatary General BAN Ki-moon and IOC President Thomas BACH as a surprise event.
Meanwhile, the organizing committee discussed international sporting agendas with key figures and journalists while promoting the Gwangju Universiade in New York from April 14 to 16.
