LG affiliates aim to wow partners, customers at CES

The International CES, the world’s largest consumer electronics festival, offers home appliance makers the chance to introduce their trendsetting products.

For other tech companies, the trade show is a venue to show off their technological prowess and seek global partnerships.

Lee Sang-chul, chief of LG Uplus, the third-largest mobile carrier in Korea, is one of the leading businesses that does not make consumer electronics businesses that are flocking to Las Vegas for 2015 International CES to open Tuesday.


During his visit, CEO and vice chairman Lee is scheduled to focus on the Internet of Things, a rising industry sector that the Korean mobile carrier is aiming to spearhead using its network infrastructure and expertise.

“The LG Uplus CEO, who has been putting focus on growing smart home services based on the IoT, is going to meet up with business partners in a wide range of sectors such as chips, smartphones, and cars,” said an official from LG Uplus.

He plans to visit the exhibition booths of chipmakers Qualcomm and Intel, smartphone-makers LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics, and carmakers including Hyundai Motor Group, and Mercedes-Benz.

Lee is also scheduled to meet with top executives of global IoT firms, especially those who are members of the Z-Wave Alliance, a global consortium committed to developing home automation technology, to discuss future partnerships.

LG Uplus is currently stepping up its efforts to foster IoT-related businesses including an energy-saving solution for buildings, called the U+Biz EMS, and a smartphone-based control system for home gas valves, named the U+Gaslock.

Setting up its own booth at the Bellagio hotel in Vegas, LG Display, LG Group’s display business unit, will also participate in the trade show.

The display manufacturer will showcase its cutting-edge organic light emitting diode technology at the exhibition venue.

An ultrahigh-definition 55-inch curved OLED display TV, a 77-inch variable OLED display TV, plastic OLEDs for wearables and head-up displays for vehicles are some of the firm’s products to attract partners and visitors at the trade show.

“LG Display will try to beef up partnerships with customers in order to popularize OLED in the year 2015,” Han Sang-beom, the chief executive of the display firm, said in a press release.
