Lexus, almost unrivaled in the premium hybrid market, aims to continue its hybrid supremacy with the younger and funkier NX300h, a hybrid version of the carmaker’s first-ever crossover model, the NX.
According to the carmaker’s Korean unit, 178 units of the hybrid crossover were sold in less than two months since its Oct. 6 launch in Korea. With its gasoline version, the NX200t (turbo), which is set to be released early next year, officials predict more than 1,000 units of the NX will be sold in 2015.
“Feedback from journalists and customers tells us that the fuel efficiency of the NX300h was higher than government-acknowledged ratings (12.6 kilometers per liter). This means that the car is better being driven than spoken about,” a Lexus PR agent said.
“We are confident that the NX300h will solidify Lexus’ leadership in the hybrid market.”
The NX300h, designed under the concept of “Premium Urban Sports Gear,” has a 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle engine and an electronic motor, which allows for maximum torque with less energy consumption.
It is equipped with an E-Four system, which adjusts the driving mode to the road conditions, including snow, ice or frequent turns. This module lessens the amount of vibrations and creates a smoother ride for passengers, the carmaker said.
The NX300h also boasts an impressive design.
A more masculine vibe is delivered through a spindle grille, diagonal side silhouette and trapeze body. The three-lens full LED has both low and high beams in a single unit. The 78 LED lamps installed on the left and right sides of the car turn on when the driver with a smart key approaches the car.
All trims are made with premium Shimamoku wood, prepared through 67 stages of processing for 38 days, as a luxury feature.
The touchpad remote controller gives users easier and more precise access to the entertainment and navigation systems, while a mirror attached to the lid of the center console box amazes female drivers trying to put on their lipstick. The trunk is also large enough to accommodate up to four golf bags without readjusting the backseats.
The NX300h is the latest to join Lexus’ powerful hybrid lineup in Korea, consisting of the CT200h hatchback, ES300h midsize sedan, GS450h sports sedan, RX450h large crossover and flagship LS600h.
The Korean unit is pinning high hopes on the new car, along with the hot-selling ES300h, in achieving a record 7,000 hybrid car sales next year. The carmaker sold 5,690 hybrid vehicles this year to November.
“We will strengthen our lineups to boost the hybrid sector, which is a huge part of the future vision for Lexus. We will also try our best to develop our unique way of greeting the customers, and let them choose our Lexus,” said Toyota Korea CEO Akihisa Yoshida, who also oversees the Lexus brand.
