South Korea's ICT ministry signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) Tuesday with its Nicaraguan counterpart to engage in joint technology programs.

The two countries will set up a joint committee to carry out the programs covering software, high-speed internet, mobile networks, digital content, big data, and human resources development, the ministry said.

"The sides will encourage cooperation and exchanges between government, government agencies, research and training institutes, businesses and other organizations of the two countries in the field of ICT," the MOU said.

Orlando Castillo, the head of the Nicaraguan Institute for Telecommunications and Post, who signed the deal, had requested the MOU in June, according to the ministry. Since then, South Korea's National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) has been studying the possibility for cooperation.

South Korea's ICT Ministry and the InterAmerican Development Bank together built an ICT center in Nicaragua.

The MOU was signed during Castillo's visit here for the 19th International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference, which opened Monday and is to continue until Nov. 7. (Yonhap)
