KT Corp., Korea’s second-largest mobile carrier, will showcase its gigabit-class technologies at the Mobile Asia Expo, Asia’s largest telecommunications trade show, to be held in Shanghai from Wednesday to Friday.
This marks the second consecutive time that the mobile carrier has been invited to participate in the MAE.
On Wednesday, KT’s chief executive Hwang Chang-gyu, a former chief of Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor unit who took the helm of the mobile carrier in January, is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech. The CEO, who introduced the firm’s gigabit services in May, will provide the blueprint for the “GiGA Era” of the mobile communications industry, an official from KT said.

“Collaborating with companies like BMW, Huawei and Deutsche Telekom, KT will offer a glimpse of what the future streets will look like, featuring cutting-edge telecom technology such as ‘giga Wi-Fi’ and ‘giga wire,’ at its exhibition booth,” the Korean telecommunications firm said in a statement.
Giga Wi-Fi, or gigabit Wi-Fi, enables mobile users to use wireless Internet services with speeds of up to 1.3 Gbps, three times faster than the current Wi-Fi services.
The next-generation mobile network, dubbed 5G Wi-Fi, is expected to foster mobile commerce, the wearables market and the Internet of Things.
The giga wire, meanwhile, has garnered a lot of attention at home and abroad as it could efficiently provide a better Internet environment, according to both the company and industry watchers. The giga wire can triple the speed of wire-based Internet without the replacement of existing copper cables.
KT said that visitors to the telecom trade show will be able to use the Wi-Fi networks provided by the Korean company, which was chosen as the main Wi-Fi provider at the event for the second straight year.
Visitors can also check the information of the trade show through near field communication media poles installed in and around the venue.
The medial poles were designed to reflect one of the organizer GSM Association’s key initiatives of the event ― a “paperless trade show,” according to KT officials.
