한 77세 여성이 산소호흡기를 착용한 채 흡연하다 얼굴에 극심한 화상을 입어 사망에 이르렀다고 지난 18일 영국 일간지 데일리 메일이 보도했다.
영국 노스요크셔에 거주하는 마가렛 우드워드는 자신의 집에서 산소 호흡기를 착용한 상태로 담배를 피우던 중 갑작스럽게 발생한 불 때문에 얼굴, 혀, 입술, 목, 손 심지어 어깨까지 화상을 입었다. 신고를 접수 받은 마을 관리자가 황급히 그녀를 병원으로 이송했으나 극심한 화상으로 인해 죽음을 피하지 못했다고 전했다.
농축된 산소를 공급해주는 산소 호흡기는 호흡 질환으로 고통 받는 이들에게 효과적이나 불꽃과 맞닿으면 화재나 폭발을 야기할 수 있다.
평소 만성 호흡기 질환을 앓고 있던 우드워드 여사 역시 집에서도 산소호흡기를 착용하고 있었던 것으로 알려졌다. 그녀는 주위의 만류에도 불구하고 산소호흡기를 낀 채 흡연을 즐기다 사고를 면치 못했다.

Elderly woman burned to death smoking while wearing oxygen mask
A 77-year old woman died after her face was engulfed in flames in a fire caused by her smoking in an oxygen mask, the Daily Mail reported on Friday.
According to the coroner’s inquest, Margaret Woodward, living in North Yorkshire of England, often smoked cigarettes while wearing an oxygen mask at her house. The incident happened when a spark from her cigarette ignited into a huge fire, causing burns to her face, lips, tongue, neck and shoulder. A local security guard quickly sent her to the hospital, but the injuries were too severe.
Highly concentrated oxygen from an oxygen mask is effective for those who suffer from respiratory diseases, but when exposed to a spark, it can cause a fire or explosion, according to the report.
The woman was relying on an oxygen mask due to chronic obstructive respiratory disease. However, she kept smoking with the mask on her face despite her acquaintances’ advice against it.
