Slovakia is perhaps best known here as a hub for South Korea manufacturing and a platform for global companies to sell cars throughout the European Union.

Less known in South Korea is that it has 1,500 mineral springs to enjoy and relax at, 900 caves to explore and over 500 castles and manor houses to visit.

The country of 5.5 million people possesses a rich tradition of tourism and hospitality at spa resort towns, said Slovakian Ambassador Dusan Bella during a small promotional event at the chancery in Hannam-dong in Seoul on Tuesday.

Some 30,000 South Korean travelers visited Slovakia in 2013, a more than 7 percent increase over the preceding year.

This year could be the best time to visit, however, as Slovakia is marking several anniversaries, including its 10th anniversary of joining the European Union, the fifth anniversary of adopting the euro, and the 70th anniversary of the Slovak national uprising, among many other events.

The Slovak town of Piestany is famous for its sulfurous mud baths. The mineral content of Piestany’s sulfurous mud is sought after around Europe and beyond. Some Slovakians use the spas to complement medical treatments for ailments afflicting the musculoskeletal system, skin, nerves and even digestion.
