LG Display, the world’s largest liquid crystal display panel maker, showcased its 3-D display technology at the Beijing International Film Festival this week as it seeks to carve out a bigger slice of the Chinese ultrahigh definition TV market.

On Thursday, the second day of the festival, LG Display said it had opened a separate pavilion. Visitors to the exhibition venue are able to watch 3-D movies including “Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” on LG’s ultrahigh definition TVs.

The company said more than two dozen 3-D flicks will be showcased during the film competition.

The Chinese government has recently decided to nurture 3-D TV industries such as those for 3-D displays and 3-D content by as early as 2015. It also said it would seek to increase the size of the 3-D vision market to 17 trillion won ($16.3 billion).

“The Chinese 3-D TV market has a lot of growth potential, as it is the world’s largest TV market and local consumers are very interested in high-tech products,” said Choi Dong-won, senior vice president of the firm’s promotion division.

“LG will hopefully take a great leap (forward) this year in 3-D TV technology, and will take the lead in China, which will be the world’s largest ultrahigh definition TV market,” Choi said.

LG Display also noted that the company’s advanced display panel technology, called “film-type patterned retarder,” will likely be utilized in TV products made by the electronics affiliate of LG Group as well as by Chinese TV manufacturers including Skyworth, Konka and Changhong.
