고물상이 녹이려던 장식품, 알고 보니 러시아 국보 '파베르제의 달걀'

한 미국인 고물상이 우연히 손에 넣은 도금 장식품이 3천3백만 달러 (354억원)를 호가하는 19세기 러시아 황실의 보물임이 밝혀지면서 전세계적으로 화제를 뿌렸다.

현지 언론의 19일 보도에 따르면, 이 고물상은 장식품을 녹여 도금된 부분의 금을 채취하려다가, 장식품 안쪽에 새겨진 “바쉐론 콘스탄틴(Vacheron Constantin)이라는 이름을 보고 호기심에 구글에 검색한 직후 아연실색했다. 자신이 녹이려던 장식품의 사진이 러시아 국보인 “파베르제의 달걀” 관련 기사에 버젓이 실려있었던 것이다.

파베르제의 달걀은 19세기 유럽 보석세공의 거장 카를 구스타보비치 파베르제가 1887년 러시아의 알렉산더 3세에 바친 보석으로 정교하게 세공된 달걀이다.

파베르제는 러시아 혁명이 발발해 러시아를 탈출할 때까지 총 50개의 파베르제의 달걀을 제작했으며, 그 중 단 42개만이 현존하는 것으로 알려졌다. 이 보물의 대부분은 러시아 크렘린 궁에 보관되어 있다.

놀란 가슴을 진정시킨 그는 사실확인을 위해 기사에 나와있던 영국 런던의 유명 보석감정사 키에란 맥카티를 만나기로 마음먹고 장식품의 사진을 찍어 생전 처음 유럽행 비행기에 올랐다.

맥카티는 영국 왕실에 대대로 예물을 제작해 온 보석공방 와츠키(Wartski)의 감정사로, 고물상이 가져온 사진을 보고 진품이라고 판단, 고물상의 미국 자택으로 동행해 실물을 보고 다시 한번 진품이라고 결론지었다.

맥카티에 따르면 이 고물상이 처음 런던으로 자신을 만나러 왔을 때 며칠간 뜬 눈으로 밤을 새운 상태였으며 실물 감정 결과를 듣고는 놀라움으로 거의 실신상태였다고 영국 현지 언론에 밝혔다. 또, 이 고물상이 자신의 실명이 밝혀지는 것을 원치 않는다고 덧붙였다.

왕실과 귀족에 보석을 납품해온 감정사인 맥카티는 그에 대해 묻는 취재진에 “완전히 다른 세상의 사람이었다”며 “기사 식당과 트럭을 연상시키는, 전형적인 블루칼라 계급 미국인이었다”고 답한 것으로 알려졌다.

또, “올해 1월에 만난 그들 내외는 더 ‘큰 집’으로 이사하겠다고 했는데, 내가 보기엔 그 집도 근처 동네의 그냥 조금 더 큰 집이었다”고 말했다.

한편, 파베르제의 달걀 중 대중에게 가장 잘 알려진 작품인 “대관식 달걀 (Imperial Coronation Egg)”은 니콜라이 2세와 황후의 대관식을 기념하기 위해 제작됐으며, 영화 오션스 12에 등장하며 대중에게 친숙해진 보물이다.

$33 million Faberge Egg discovered by scrap metal dealer

A U.S. scrap metal dealer intending to melt down an ornament for its gold was shocked to discover it was a $33 million Faberge egg, a British expert said.

Kieran McCarthy of London jeweler Wartski said the scrap metal dealer, who wished to remain anonymous, bought the gold egg for $13,302 from an antiques dealer about a decade ago and had planned to melt it down and sell the metal, but the project was put on hold when he was unable to find a buyer, the Daily Telegraph reported Wednesday.

McCarthy said the egg stayed in the man's home until a night in 2012 when he decided to Google "egg" and "Vacheron Constantin," the name etched on the timepiece inside the egg.

The man discovered a Telegraph article from earlier that year that included an interview with McCarthy and a picture of the egg in his possession.

"He saw the article and recognized his egg in the picture. He flew straight over to London -- the first time he had ever been to Europe -- and came to see us. He hadn't slept for days," McCarthy said. "He brought pictures of the egg and I knew instantaneously that was it. I was flabbergasted -- it was like being Indiana Jones and finding the Lost Ark."

McCarthy said he flew to the United States and verified the egg.

"I examined it and said, 'You have an Imperial Faberge Easter Egg.' And he practically fainted. He literally fell to the floor in astonishment," he said.

The egg, created by Carl Faberge for Tsar Alexander III in 1887, was purchased by Wartski on behalf of a Faberge collector.

McCarthy said the scrap dealer is "petrified" of his newfound wealth becoming public knowledge.

"He's from another world entirely. It's a world of diners and pick-up trucks, real blue-collar America, and he and his partner are still stunned by all this," he said. "When I saw them in January, they hadn't moved out but they were going to, although I think it was just to a bigger house around the corner. They've also bought a new car." (UPI)
