Many studies conducted by medical researchers have shown that the key to having a great sex life is to have a strong heart and cardiovascular system. Minerals, especially zinc, are scientifically proven elements that contribute to an active reproductive system and are also well-known aphrodisiacs.

“There’s a growing body of evidence that some of the vitamins and components in foods can enhance sexual function and sexual experience,” Jennifer R. Berman, the director of the Berman Women’s Wellness Center in Beverly Hills California, was quoted as saying in TIME magazine.

To help people put some sizzle back into their sex life, TIME magazine has identified seven foods for better sex.

1. Avocados

They are rich in unsaturated fats and low in saturated fat, which is good for the heart and arteries. Any foods that can keep the heart beating strongly can keep blood flowing to all the right places. Men with heart disease have a 50 percent higher chance of suffering from erectile dysfunction, TIME magazine added.

2. Almonds

They have been purported to increase passion, act as a sexual stimulant and boost fertility. Almonds have important minerals for sexual health and reproduction, such as zinc, selenium and vitamin E. “Zinc helps enhance libido and sexual desire,” said Dr. Berman.

3. Strawberries

They are full of folic acid, a B vitamin that can help prevent birth defects in women. According to a study published by the University of California, Berkley, folic acid may increase men’s sperm counts.

4. Seafood

Along with oysters, a well-known aphrodisiac, other types of seafood are great sources of libido-boosting zinc. Also, oily fish -- like wild salmon and herring -- contain omega-3, which is essential for a healthy heart.

5. Arugula

It has aided arousal since the first century A.D., and a study has shown that the trace minerals and antioxidants packed in arugula are essential for sexual health. This is because arugula helps block the absorption of some of the environmental contaminants deemed to hurt the libido.

6. Figs

Figs are known to be a fertility booster and an excellent aphrodisiac as they are full of soluble and insoluble fiber, which is important for a healthy heart. Additionally, high-fiber foods can help women maintain their curves.

7. Citrus

Any member of this tropical fruit family is extremely rich in antioxidants, vitamin C and folic acid, all of which are essential for men’s reproductive health.
