외신, 한국 쇼트트랙 계주 대표팀 극찬 '금메달 자격 충분했다'

“한국 선수들은 중국 선수들보다 뛰어났으며, 맹렬한 경기를 보여준 그들은 승리할 충분한 자격이 있다.”

미국 스포츠 전문 사이트 블리쳐 리포트는 한국 대표팀이 18일(이하 한국시간) 러시아 소치의 아이스버그 스케이팅 팰리스에서 열린 대회 쇼트트랙 여자 3,000ｍ 계주 결승에서 4분09초498의 기록으로 금메달을 획득한 소식을 전하면서 “한국은 마침내 공정함이 찾아왔다고 느낄 것”이라고 보도했다.

한국 쇼트트랙은 4년 전 밴쿠버 대회에서 1위로 레이스를 마치고도 경기 중 우리 선수가 중 국 선수를 밀쳤다는 석연찮은 반칙 판정을 받아 중국에 금메달을 내주고 메달 하나 건지지 못했다.

하지만 올해 소치에선 상황이 역전됐다. 2010년 밴쿠버올림픽 우승국인 중국은 2위로 레이스를 마쳤지만 마지막 주자 교대 후 뒤따르던 한국 선수의 진로를 방해했다며 심판진으로부터 반칙 판정을 받아 노메달로 물러나야했다.

다른 외신들도 이러한 두 국가대표팀 간의 엇갈린 운명을 강조했다.

로이터통신은 “한국팀이 밴쿠버에서의 아픔을 씻어냈다”고 평했으며, 이에 앞서 BBC는 밴쿠버에서 금메달을 놓친 “한국에겐 달콤한 복수”였다고 전했다.

한국은 이번 우승으로 1992년 알베르빌 대회부터 7차례 치러진 올림픽 여자 3,000ｍ 계주에서 통산 5번째 정상에 올랐다.

Korea’s win in short track relay ‘sweet revenge’ against China: BBC

The South Korean women’s short track relay team made an amazing comeback on Tuesday after edging passed the Chinese team to win gold in the 3,000m relay at the Sochi Winter Olympics.

South Korea and China exchanged the lead five times in the last eight laps in a battle that was back and forth from the start. On the final lap, Shim Suk-hee passed Li Jianrou to give the Koreans Olympic gold for the fifth time in the past six Olympics.

The Chinese team crossed the line in second place, but was soon disqualified for impeding on the final lap, raising Canada to silver and Italy to bronze. It was a similar situation to four years ago at the Vancouver Games, though the other way around. At that time, the Korean team finished the women’s relay in first place but was disqualified for illegal contact with a Chinese skater.

Foreign news outlets took notice of the dramatic reversal of the rivals.

“Revenge was sweet for the Koreans, who had lost gold at Vancouver 2010 after a penalty for impeding the Chinese team,” the BBC reported on Tuesday.

U.S. sports news site the Bleacher Report said, “South Korea may feel like justice has finally been done.” It continued, saying the Koreans were “too good for them (Chinese) and deserved the victory after a spirited race.”

The online media also mentioned that the majority of the Korean team is at an age where they will be able to defend the crown in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games.

Reuters said the relay gold “eased some of the pain from the Vancouver Games” for South Korean team.
