Genesis BBQ Group, operator of the BBQ fried chicken franchise, will open 1,000 stores in Indonesia by 2020, it said Wednesday.

The group’s president Yoon Hong-geun on the day signed a master franchise deal with Radius Wibow, head of Goodway Group of Indonesia, to set up more than 1,000 BBQ Premium outlets in the Southeast Asian country in six years.

“We will start from Jakarta’s Java No. 1 to promote Korean high-end dining,” Yoon said after signing the deal. “BBQ Premium cafes selling fried chicken, pasta, salad and other diverse dishes have seen constant growth in the Southeast Asian region, including Vietnam, Singapore and Thailand.”

BBQ said it planned to establish a culinary control tower in Indonesia to secure and control the quality, taste and supply.

Indonesia was cited as a significant market for BBQ as it consumes up to 37 million chickens on a daily basis, as up to 86 percent of the people are Muslim, and avoid other meats for religious reasons. By contrast, Korea consumes less than 3 million birds a day.

Genesis BBQ currently operates stores in 30 countries around the world and holds master franchise contracts with 57 countries including China.
