Postpartum depression can turn into chronic problem: study
Postpartum depression -- mood swings or become depressed in the week following childbirth -- can lead to long-term woes, a study suggested.
The study conducted by researchers from the University of Leuven, in Belgium, found that 30 to 50 percent of women with the mood disorder, which usually occurs in the first four to six weeks after giving birth, developed long-term depression.
“Clinicians need to be aware of mothers’ previous episodes of depression and possible contextual factors heightening vulnerability for a chronic course of depression,” the researchers said in a news release from the Harvard Review of Psychiatry.
It also discovered that a poor relationship with a partner, a history of depression or sexual abuse, high levels of parental stress and certain personality traits were the main factors behind the disorder.
The researchers said postpartum depression can harm a child’s development and the early relationship between mother and child.
