‘여대생 5명 중 1명 성폭행 당한다’

지난 25일 미국 대통령 버락 오바마는 여대생 5명 중 1명이 성폭행 당한다는 충격적인 보고를 듣고 이를 근절시키기 위해 전담팀을 구성하겠다고 발표했다.

오바마 대통령은 주례 인터넷, 라디오 연설에서 대학 캠퍼스와 군대 내에 만연한 성폭력을 대통령, 총사령관이자 두 딸은 둔 아버지로서 용인할 수 없다고 강조했다.

오바마 대통령은 “많은 가정과 지역 공동체에 영향을 주는 성폭력 등의 도전 과제를 다룰 TF를 구성하도록 내각에 지시했다”며 대학 당국과 군대 내에서 일어나는 성폭력 예방 및 대응에 더 적극적으로 나서게 하는 방안을 마련할 것이라고 말했다.

미국에서 성폭력을 당해본 경험이 있는 여성들이 2200만 명에 이르고 대부분 피의자는 주변에 알고 지내던 남성인 경우가 많았다.

오바마 대통령은 남성들 사이에서 성폭력 피해 여성들이 더 많아지는 것을 방지하기 위해 남성들의 인식과 태도도 변해야 한다고 강조했다.

1 in 5 U.S. women have been sexually assaulted: report

U.S. President Barack Obama has announced a plan to set up a task force to bring an end to sexual crimes in the military and school campuses.

Speaking in his weekly radio and Internet address Wednesday, Obama cited a report that 1 in 5 women have been raped in their lifetime.

“Sexual assault is an affront to our basic decency and humanity. And it‘s about all of us -- the safety of those we love most: our moms, our wives, our daughters and our sons,” the president said.

The number of raped women totals 22 million, where many are victimized during their college years or in the army by men they already know. Obama said those abused are not the only one to suffer after an assault but their families, adding “communities, our whole country, is held back.”

The president called for a change of culture where young men and boys alike feel a responsibility to act upon seeing inappropriate behavior from others.
