Local film on ex-President Roh draws over 10 mln viewers
A Korean film inspired by the early years of late President Roh Moo-hyun topped the 10 million viewer mark on Sunday, becoming the first film to reach the milestone this year.
After 33 days of its release, "The Attorney" had drawn slightly over 10 million moviegoers as of early Sunday, according to box-office data compiled by the Korean Film Council.
The film had topped the local box office for the fifth week in a row until last week, despite recently being released illegally online, it added.
Starring actor Song Kang-ho, the hero of director Bong Joon-ho's latest hit "Snowpiercer," the new film depicts the story of a small-time tax lawyer in the southern city of Busan who takes a completely different life path after taking on a human rights case.
The attorney is modeled after the lawyer-turned-president Roh.
In the so-called Burim case in 1981, the government of then authoritarian President Chun Doo-hwan illegally detained and tortured a group of university students, school teachers and other salaried workers on rebellion charges to suppress pro-democracy activists and solidify his dictatorial regime.
"The Attorney" is the ninth local film to hit the 10 million viewer mark, along with "The Thieves," "The Host" and "Haeundae."
As of Friday, Hollywood animation film "Frozen" topped the list of ticket reservations for the weekend, taking 53.4 percent of the total, followed by "The Attorney" with 11.4 percent and "The Wolf of Wall Street" with 4.8 percent, according to the film council. (Yonhap News)
