'아버지 부시' 부인 바버라, 폐렴 입원 6일만에 퇴원

'아버지 부시'로 불리는 조지 H.W 부시(89) 전 미국 대통령의 부인 바버라 부시(88) 여사가 폐렴으로 입원한 지 6일 만인 4일(현지시간) 퇴원했다.

부시 여사는 지난해 12월 30일 텍사스주 휴스턴에 있는 '텍사스 의료센터 감리교 병원'에 입원한 바 있다.

부시 전 대통령의 대변인인 짐 맥그래스는 부시 여사가 이날 오전 집으로 돌아갈 수 있게 됐다며 여사는 의료진의 보살핌에 깊은 감사를 표시했다고 전했다.

부시 전 대통령 부부는 6일 69번째 결혼기념일을 맞는다.

조지 W 부시 전 대통령의 어머니인 부시 여사는 남편의 재임 시절 '소탈한 퍼스트레이디'로 대중의 사랑을 받았다.

그러나 2008년 천공성 궤양 수술을, 2009년에는 심장 판막 교체 수술을 각각 받고 이듬해에는 이전에 앓았던 갑상선 질환이 가볍게 재발해 또 한차례 입원했다.

아버지 부시 전 대통령도 2012년 말부터 지난해 초까지 2개월 가까이 같은 병원에 기관지염 합병증으로 입원했으며 한 때 중환자실에서 치료를 받기로 했다.

이들 부부는 여름에는 메인주에 있는 자택에 머물고 겨울에는 휴스턴에서 생활하고 있다.

Ex-first lady Barbara Bush leaves Houston hospital

Former first lady Barbara Bush praised the staff of a Texas hospital where she spent nearly a week being treated for pneumonia before going home Saturday.

Jim McGrath, a spokesman for President George H.W. Bush and his wife, says doctors at Houston Methodist Hospital decided Saturday morning to allow Barbara Bush to go home. The 88-year-old Bush family matriarch had been hospitalized since Monday.

``I cannot thank the doctors and nurses at Houston Methodist enough for making sure I got the best treatment and got back to George and our dogs as quickly as possible,'' Barbara Bush said. The Bushes are well-known dog lovers and live in Houston.

McGrath had no immediate information on future treatment for Bush.

``She's great. She's had a couple of great days. She's responded well to the medication,'' McGrath said.

The nation's longest-married presidential first couple will celebrate their 69th wedding anniversary Monday.

Barbara Bush had heart surgery in March 2009 for a severe narrowing of the main heart valve. She also was hospitalized in November 2008, when she underwent surgery for a perforated ulcer. In 2010, she was admitted to the hospital after having a mild relapse of Graves disease, a thyroid condition for which she was treated in 1989.

Her 89-year-old husband spent nearly two months in the same hospital and was discharged in January 2013 after treatment for a bronchitis-related cough and other health issues.
