LONDON (AP) ― Tottenham dropped out of the League Cup on Wednesday, allowing two goals in the final 10 minutes in a 2-1 home loss to West Ham in the quarterfinals.
Manchester United advanced with a 2-0 victory at Stoke on goals from Ashley Young and Patrice Evra. The Red Devils will face Sunderland, with a potential final against rival Manchester City after the Blues were drawn against West Ham in the other semifinal.
Tottenham interim manager Tim Sherwood made six lineup changes in the team’s first match since Andre Villas-Boas was fired Monday after a 5-0 home loss to Liverpool. Adebayor put Spurs in front with a spectacular volley in the 68th, but West Ham got back into the match when Modibo Maiga flicked the ball to Matt Taylor, who found Matt Jarvis before the winger scored with a clean finish in the 80th.
Maiga then jumped higher than the Tottenham defenders five minutes from time and beat Hugo Lloris with a header to silence the Spurs fans with his first goal of the season.
United’s match at Stoke was interrupted in the 29th minute because of hail with a delay of more than 10 minutes before Young scored a spectacular goal from the edge of the box in the 62nd following a 1-2 with Javier Hernandez. Evra then sealed the Red Devils’ win by curling home a right-footed strike in the 78th.

Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid advanced to the Copa del Rey’s round of 16, dispensing third-division opponents Wednesday.
Five-time cup winner Sevilla became the night’s only topflight team to be upset by a lower-division team when third-tier Racing Santander won 2-0 in Seville to overturn a 1-0 first-leg loss.
Madrid, which had been held to a scoreless draw by Olimpic Xativa in the first leg, scored twice in the first half to win 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Asier Illarramendi put Madrid ahead in the 16th with his first goal since the midfielder transferred from Real Sociedad last summer. Jese Rodriguez set up Illarramendi to end Olimpic’s run of keeping a clean sheet in nine consecutive matches.
Club World Cup
Raja Casablanca upset Ronaldinho’s Atletico Mineiro 3-1 on Wednesday night and will play Bayern Munich in this weekend’s final of the Club World Cup.
Mohsine Moutaouali converted a tiebreaking penalty kick in the 84th after Mouhssine Iajour was tripped by defender Rver, and Vivien Mabide added a goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
“Who would have believed we would come to this,” Raja coach Faouzi Benzarti said through a translator.
Iajour had put the local favorite ahead in the 51st minute, and Ronaldinho tied the score for the South American champion with a free kick in the 63rd.
