LONDON (AP) ― Chelsea allowed late goals in both regulation and extra time to lose 2-1 to Sunderland in the League Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Manchester City advanced with help from Edin Dzeko’s two goals at Leicester.
South Korea midfielder Ki Sung-yueng grabbed Sunderland’s winner with two minutes left at the Stadium of Light, with Chelsea having been taken to extra time after allowing an 88th-minute equalizer by Fabio Borini.
“Football is about scoring goals and winning matches, not being the best team on the pitch,” said Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, whose largely second-string side wasted a number of chances after Frank Lampard scored in the 46th minute.
Like Chelsea, City rested several key players but still had enough to top second-tier Leicester 3-1, with Dzeko’s brace adding to the opener scored by Aleksandar Kolarov from a superb free kick.
The other quarterfinals take place on Wednesday, when Tottenham hosts West Ham and Manchester United visits Stoke.

Neymar scored his sixth goal in seven days to cap Barcelona’s 3-0 win over Cartagena as it advanced in the Copa del Rey on a 7-1 aggregate score.
With the round of 32 matchup practically decided after Barcelona’s 4-1 victory in the first leg, Pedro Rodriguez opened the scoring before Cristian Tello’s deflected shot sneaked inside the post in the 68th.
Neymar rose over his marker to head home Andres Iniesta’s cross in the 88th and record his first goal in the competition. The Brazil striker had a hat trick against Celtic last week and he scored twice against Villarreal over the weekend.
Barcelona captain Carles Puyol played his first game at Camp Nou in nine months after being sidelined by injuries.
Also, Osasuna eliminated Malaga on away goals after a 1-1 draw, while Villarreal won 1-0 win at Elche to go through 3-2 on aggregate. Levante routed Recreativo Huelva 4-0 at home to easily overturn its 1-0 first-leg loss.
Defending champion Atletico Madrid hosts Sant Andreu on Wednesday after winning the first game 4-0.
Club World Cup
Bayern Munich closed in on its fifth trophy of 2013 by defeating Asian champion Guangzhou Evergrande 3-0 Tuesday to reach the Club World Cup final.
Franck Ribery scored in the 40th minute and Mario Mandzukic in the 44th. Mario Goetze added a goal for the Germans in the second half.
The Champions League winners will face Atletico Mineiro of Brazil or Moroccan champion Raja Casablanca in Saturday’s final. Atletico, led by Ronaldinho, plays the local favorite in Marrakech on Wednesday.
Bayern is bidding to win its first Club World Cup after having twice won the tournament when it was the Intercontinental Cup. Bayern ensured that the European champion reached the final for the 10th time in as many editions of the tournament.
