‘Friend 2’ tops 1 million mark at box office
South Korean film “Friend 2” sold 1 million tickets at the box office in just four days, setting a new record for a movie targeting adults.
The sequel of the 2001 box-office hit “Friend” took the shortest time to reach a million viewers, outdoing previous record-breaking titles such as “Nameless Gangster” and “New World.” Directed by Kwak Kyung-taek, the film is now generating buzz among film buffs here.
Given that the release date was a weekday and November is an off-season for the film industry, the movie’s success comes as a surprise.
“Friend 2” picks up from where the first movie left off, with Jun-seok getting discharged from prison after serving 17 years on the charge of masterminding the murder of Dong-su. The story centers upon Jun-seok, his father Cheol-joo and Dong-su’s son Seung-hoon.
According to data from the Korean Film Council, “Friend 2” has sold 1,379,000 tickets as of Monday, outpacing second-placed “The Fives” by a wide margin.
