Cho Yang-ho, chairman of Hanjin Group which incorporates the nation’s top airline company Korean Air, was recognized for his contribution to the regional economy of Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation awarded Cho with the 18th Eddy Award on Thursday, Hanjin officials said Friday.

The LAEDC is a private, nonprofit organization established in 1981 to promote the region’s economy and to attract global business units.

Its annual Eddy Award, which recognizes leadership in business and government, has been given to celebrities such as Boeing, the Walt Disney Company and Los Angeles Dodgers owner Magic Johnson.

“Since Korean Air established the Seoul-L.A. route 40 years ago, L.A. has been the center of cultural, educational and economic communication between the two countries,” Cho said.

“Together with Korean Air, Hanjin Group will continue to perform a key role in the development of L.A.”

Korean Air is the largest Asian airline operating in the United States, and its U.S. regional headquarters is located in L.A.

Hanjin Group currently creates $1.5 billion in business annually and some 47,000 jobs in the region, according to officials.
