The nation’s biggest mobile carrier SK Telecom said Tuesday that it shipped a thousand units of its smart education robot to a French company.

The robot, called “Atti,” is expected to be distributed to French educational institutions through its local online distributor Big Robots.

“This robot aims to improve children’s intelligence and physical abilities by simply playing with a robot,” according to the telecom.

It includes a program where children can pile up block-shaped graphics through movement and sensors, and an English-language learning program jointly developed with Utah State University.

The company said Atti was becoming more sought after in the global market. It is being used in Talentum School, an IT-based education program run by Spain’s largest mobile carrier Telefonica. SK Telecom also signed a deal with an Indonesian company at the 2013 Robotworld, a robot exhibition in Seoul, in October to provide 200 sample orders.

“Atti took aim at the global market from the development stage. The contract with the French company proved that the robot has global competitiveness in terms of education efficiency,” SK Telecom’s convergence business head Park Chul-soon said. “We are expecting this device will lead the ICT-based smart industry.”
