Rep. Chung Mong-joon of the Saenuri Party said that he will personally invest 100 million won ($87,400) in a film production about a tragic inter-Korean naval skirmish that killed six seamen 11 years ago.

“I always felt indebted to the naval soldiers killed a day before the final match of (Korea-Japan) World Cup while safeguarding (Korean) territorial waters during the second Yeonpyeong Battle,” Chung said in a statement Wednesday. “I expect the film to portray their spirits of sacrifice,” he added.

A private movie firm is currently making the film about the skirmish but has been suffering from insufficient funding to complete the production. Families of naval soldiers, government officials, politicians and others have recently joined a donation campaign to support the production.

Rep. Chung is the richest assembly member in Korea. The son of the late founder of Hyundai Group owns the largest share of Hyundai Heavy Industries.
