South Korea’s new consul general to Shanghai on Wednesday pledged to take the lead in rendering support for economic activities by Korean people and companies doing business in the Chinese financial hub.
Gu Sang-chan, the new consul general to Shanghai who will take up the post this week, said his consular office would spare no efforts to support Korean firms in a creative and active manner with the perception that his mission is an outpost of economic diplomacy.
“I will put my priority on solving difficulties facing Korean companies in Shanghai,” Gu said in Seoul. “Shanghai is an economic hub, so I will focus on helping Korean companies, particularly small- and medium-sized firms, resolve difficulties in doing businesses there.”
Gu, a former lawmaker of the ruling Saenuri Party who is loyal to President Park Geun-hye, was appointed Tuesday as South Korea’s consul general to Shanghai.
The long-time politician Gu, 56, is regarded by many in political circles in Seoul for having expertise on China.
In February 2008, Gu accompanied Park to China when she visited the country as a special envoy of Park’s predecessor, Lee Myung-bak, according to Seoul’s foreign ministry. (Yonhap News)
