Three Korean music professors performed for International Jazz Day, an annual event organized by UNESCO to celebrate “the virtues of jazz as a force for peace, unity and an educational tool.”
UNESCO proclaimed April 30 as International Jazz Day at its general conference in 2011.
Kwangshin University professors Chae Hee-ho (drum), Jeon Ji-yeon (piano) and Choi Se-yul (contrabass), who specialize in applied music, performed for the event at Gwangju Culture and Art Center in Gwangju on April 22.

The trio performed Latin jazz with hints of traditional Korean music. The show, video recorded on the day of the performance, was broadcast online through the UNESCO website on International Jazz Day.
“I hope our performance can inspire many young aspiring artists who wish to pursue a career in applied music,” said Chae. “We’d like to see more development in the applied music industry.”
The Gwangju-based university is also planning to hold a special class with David Berkman, who teaches at the Queens College Jazz Masters Program in New York, on its Gwangju campus on June 6.
