보스턴 마라톤 생존자, 이틀 뒤 텍사스 폭발사건까지 목격!

지난 15일 (현지시간) 일어난 보스턴 마라톤에서 간발의 차이로 폭탄을 피한 남자가 이틀 후에 텍사스에서 일어난 폭발사건을 눈 앞에서 목격하는 사건이 발생했다고 AP통신이 최근 보도했다.

텍사스 오스틴 출신의 조 버티 (43)씨는 최근 자선단체 챔피언포칠드런 (Champions4Children)이 주최하는 자선 이벤트를 위해 보스턴 마라톤에 참가했다.

희귀병에 시달리는 아이들을 위한 이 이벤트에서는 아이들이 집에서 자신의 ‘파트너’가 마라톤을 뛰는 것을 보게 된다. 버티 씨는 막판 6킬로미터 정도를 남겨두고 슬슬 한계를 느꼈지만 파트너 ‘드류’를 위해서 끝까지 완주하겠다고 결심했고, 결국 레이스를 마쳤다.

사건은 그가 결승선을 지나고 수초 후에 터졌다. 버티 씨는 커다란 폭발음을 들었고 “폭탄이라는 것을 순간적으로 알아차리고” 결승선에서 기다리고 있을 아내 에이미 씨를 생각했다.

다행히 에이미 씨와 버티 씨 모두 상처 하나 입지 않았지만 에이미 씨 바로 옆에 서 있던 여성은 한 손의 손가락 전부와 다리 한 쪽을 잃었다고 한다. 이 사건을 세 명이 숨지고 180명 이상이 부상을 당했다.

버티 씨 부부는 다음날인 16일 비행기를 타고 집으로 돌아왔다.

문제는 그 다음날인 17일 터졌는데, 댈러스에서 하루 종일 사업상 회의를 하다가 자동차로 귀가 중이었던 버티 씨는 웨이코 시를 지나던 도중 다시 한번 새카맣게 하늘을 뒤덮은 검은 연기와 마주쳤다.

그곳은 약 15명의 목숨을 앗아가고 160여명을 다치게 한 텍사스 비료공장 폭발사고 현장이었던 것. 또 한번의 폭발사고 현장과 마주친 그는 순간 “나랑 장난 하는거야?”고 생각했다고 한다.

사건사고를 몰고 다니는듯한 버티 씨에게 지인들은 “자신이 불행하다고 느끼지 않냐”고 물었지만 버티 씨는 이와는 정반대로 자신이 행운아라고 말한다. 그는 “저와 아내가 폭발 현장에서 불과 10미터 거리에 있었는데도 전혀 다치지 않았다는 건 엄청난 축복이죠”라고 말했다.

한편 에이미 씨는 계속해서 사고에 휘말리는 남편을 위해서는 그가 절대 멈춰서지 않고 계속 움직이게 하든지 아니면 “혼자 벌판에 계속 서 있게 해야된다”고 농담을 했다. (코리아헤럴드)

Boston Marathon survivor witnesses Texas explosion days later

A U.S. man who just barely missed the fatal Boston Marathon blast on Monday found himself just stone’s throw away from another a deadly explosion in Texas two days later.

Joe Berti participated in this year’s Boston Marathon to help with a charity event by Champions4Children, according to the Associated Press. Seconds after 43-year-old Berti crossed the finish line, he heard a loud explosion.

He said he “knew immediately” it was a bomb and thought about his wife Amy, who he thought might have been waiting near the finish line. It turned out that both Berti and his wife walked away without a scratch from the tragedy that claimed three lives and injured more than 180.

But Berti had a close run-in with another tragedy just days later in his home state of Texas.

He was heading home after a business meeting on Wednesday when he witnessed a black puff of smoke ahead to his left. His initial reaction: “You’ve got to be kidding!”

Berti drove closer to find a giant fireball with “a massive force that shook his car.”

Despite his experiences, Berti said he did not feel unlucky as people assumed. He said to the contrary, he felt “blessed that my wife could be 10 yards from the explosion and not have a scratch.”

His wife Amy joked that in order to avoid such close shaves they needed to “keep him moving” or he needed to “just stand in an open field.”
