Animal advocates say they are looking for homes for six dozen cats seized from a California home that reeked of urine and litter.
The Riverside Press-Enterprise said animal control officers with a warrant swept down on the home in Menifee in the Sun City area last Thursday.
"The smell was horrendous," officer Monique Middleton told the newspaper. Middleton works for the non-profit Animal Friends of the Valleys, which provides animal control services for Menifee.
The officer said the home's owner, an unidentified man in his 50s, had been trying to rescue unwanted cats but things got out of hand.
The cats were kept indoors, were well-fed and had all been spayed or neutered, Middleton told the Press-Enterprise, but many had an upper respiratory infection, probably from living in close quarters.
If the man is charged, he would most likely face a misdemeanor count of animal cruelty, Middleton said, but that would be up to the Riverside County district attorney's office.
She said the man originally agreed to cooperate with officers in removing the cats, but backed out. "He was just afraid his cats might get put to sleep," Middleton said.
She said the couple will not be allowed to return until the house has been thoroughly cleaned. (UPI)

미국에서 한 남성이 고양이 72마리를 집에서 키우다가 당국에 모두 압수당하는 사건이 발생했다.
캘리포니아 현지 언론은 동물보호 단체인 애니멀 프렌즈 오브 더 밸리스 (Animal Friends of the Valleys)의 직원들이 지난 21일 (현지시간) 리버사이드 카운티에 사는 신원이 공개되지 않은 한 50대 남성이 키우던 고양이들을 모두 압수했다고 보도했다.
단체의 직원인 모니크 미들턴에 따르면 이 남성은 버려진 고양이들을 안타깝게 여겨 집에서 키우기 시작했으나, 어느 순간 ‘도가 지나쳤다(got out of hand)’라고 한다.
결국 좁은 공간에서 단체로 살고 있는 고양이들의 건강상태를 우려한 동물보호당국은 동물들을 몰수해, 이들의 새로운 보금자리를 찾아주기로 결정을 내렸다고 한다.
고양이들의 영양상태는 양호했으며 모두 중성화되었으나 많은 고양이들에게 좁은 공간에서 오랜 시간을 보낸 것으로 인한 상부 호흡기 문제가 있었다고 한다.
남성은 처음에는 동물들을 데려가겠다는 결정에 찬성을 했지만, 고양이들이 안락사 될지도 모른다는 두려움에 나중에 생각을 바꿨으며, 이로 인해 당국에서는 강제로 집행을 해야 했다고 한다.
미들턴은 현재 남성의 집에서 끔찍한 (horrendous) 냄새가 나고 있으며 집을 샅샅이 청소한 후에야 그가 다시 이곳에서 살 수 있을 것이라고 설명했다.
