Hong Seoung-yong to head Duksung Women’s University

The school foundation of Duksung Women’s University said Tuesday that it appointed Hong Seoung-yong, 64, vice chairman of the Presidential Advisory Council on Education, Science and Technology, its ninth president of the university.

Hong graduated from Korea University with a major in business administration, completed a post-doc course at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in the United States and received honorary Ph.Ds from the University of Le Havre in France and the University of Rhode Island in the U.S.

He served as vice minister of maritime affairs and fisheries for three years from 1999 and president of Inha University in Incheon, Gyeonggi Province, for seven years from 2002.

In 2011, he chaired the university structural reform committee under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, and last year was named vice chairman of the advisory panel. He will take office Feb. 28 for a four-year term.
