Women with high calcium levels twice as likely to die from heart disease: study

Women with high levels of calcium are at twice the risk of dying from heart disease than those with normal levels, a recent study has found.

A research team at Uppsala University studied the correlation between calcium levels and women’s causes of death by analyzing the eating habits of 61,443 female participants aged 50 and older. The data included each participant’s diet and supplement intakes for an average of the past 19 years.

Results showed that 48 percent of women with over 1,400 mg of daily calcium intake died from cardiovascular and heart disease, the highest rate for the cause of death in women, followed by women who died of age at 17 percent and stroke at 8 percent. Women’s average calcium intake was 572 mg per day, equivalent to five slices of cheese, rising up to 2,137 mg per day for women who consumed the most.

The recommended amount of calcium intake by the Foods Standards Agency for adults is 700mg per day from sources including milk, cheese and green vegetables.

Interestingly, women’s death rate increased when less than 600mg of calcium were supplemented every day.

Researchers, however, said overconsumption of vitamin supplements is harmful to the body since it could overload the body with excessive levels of calcium in the blood.

女 과도한 칼슘섭취 사망률 두 배 높여

칼슘 수치가 높은 여성들이 정상적인 칼슘 수치를 갖고 있는 여성들에 비해 심장질환으로 사망할 확률이 두 배 가량 높다는 연구결과가 발표됐다.

스웨덴의 웁살라 대학의 연구원들은 여성의 사망과 칼슘량의 상관관계를 알아보기 50세 이상의 61,443여성들의 식단 및 비타민 섭취량을 19년간 기록했다.

연구결과에 따르면 사망한 여성 48퍼센트가 심혈관 및 심장질환으로 사망했으며 17퍼센트는 나이로 인해 사망했으며 8퍼센트는 뇌졸중으로 사망했다고 밝혀졌다.

영국식품규범청이 제안하는 하루 권장 칼슘 섭취량은 700mg으로 우유, 치즈 및 녹색 채소를 통해 섭취하는 것이 바람직하다고 전했다.

흥미롭게도 권장 칼슘량보다 낮은 600mg의 칼슘을 섭취한 여성들의 사망률도 높았다.

그렇다고 해서 칼슘 보충제를 먹어 칼슘량을 높이는 것은 혈중 칼슘수치를 급격히 높여
