Psy’s “Gangnam Style” has topped more than 1 million sales in the United Kingdom.
In an announcement made by the Official Charts Company on Feb. 8, “Gangnam Style” became the 129th track to sell 1 million copies in U.K. history, and the first by an Asian artist to reach the milestone.
“This is an amazing achievement by Psy,” commented Martin Talbot, managing director of the Official Charts Company. “It is further confirmation of ‘Gangnam Style’ as a true phenomenon ― it is the first U.K. million-seller by an Asian music star, and a sign that K-pop has truly arrived in the U.K.!”
“Gangnam Style” made its debut on the Official Singles Chart on Sept. 16, 2012, at No. 37. The following week the track jumped 34 places to No. 3, reaching No. 1 on Sept. 30.
The single remained in the U.K.’s top slot for a week, and spent another 17 weeks in the top 10, becoming U.K.’s sixth-biggest-selling single of 2012. The track is currently in its 21st week on the Official Singles Chart.
Four songs from 2012 made the Official Singles “million seller” list: Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know,” Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe,” James Arthur’s “Impossible” and Fun’s “We Are Young.”
