Envoys promote peace in international beauty pageant

Foreign envoys participated in the promotion of world peace in the World Miss University beauty pageant at Sheraton Grande Walkerhill Hotel, Seoul, on Dec. 11.

Ambassadors from Paraguay, Poland and Slovakia participated with one foreign envoy, Uruguayan Ambassador to Korea Alba Florio Legnani participating as an official pageant judge.

The World Miss University beauty pageant is an international event created by the United Nations General Assembly in 1986 to both celebrate and promote the U.N.’s “International Year of Peace.”

The third Tuesday of September is “International Day of Peace.”

The pageant is held annually in Seoul, and selects a World Miss University Peace Corps representative who then promotes peace by participating in a slew of international events the following year.

Mia Hasanagic, Miss Denmark, won this year’s contest. Hasanagic, 20, attends Aarhus University in Denmark. She studies global management and counts dancing and poetry as her interests, according to the World Miss University web site.

Pageant competitors do volunteer work and promote U.N. affiliated events and programs through their participation.

This year’s event was the 25th World Miss University Pageant World Miss University and contributed to promote U.N. themes, including “Peace Movement for the World Unification; One World, Humanity as Brothers and Sisters; and Environment Movement of Humanity to survive on Earth, according to the pageant’s website.
