Myanmar pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is expected to visit Seoul National University next month.

“Though a specific schedule has not been finalized yet, the university is in consultation with her aides over its planned conferment of an honorary doctorate and her giving a special lecture at Seoul National University,” a university official said.

Suu Kyi will visit Korea for the first time for four days from Jan. 28 to Feb. 1. She is invited to the opening ceremony of the 2013 PyeongChang Special Winter Olympics, which will kick off Jan. 29.

She will also attend the Global Summit, an event for the Olympics for the developmentally disabled. About 300 distinguished figures are expected at the summit Jan. 30-31. They will discuss how to end poverty and exclusion for those with intellectual disabilities.

While in Korea, Suu Kyi will also visit Gwangju Jan. 30 and 31, according to the May 18 Memorial Foundation last month. She will attend a dinner ceremony hosted by Gwangju and visit the cemetery honoring democracy fighters of the city. Gwangju is well known as a center of democracy movements in South Korea.

Suu Kyi was under house arrest for 15 years starting in 1989 and was released in November 2010. She has since reached out to people suffering from poverty and social and political oppression.

She entered parliament after her NLD party won a landslide victory in the April 1 by-elections.
