A recent study has found that playing hard to get is one of the best ways to keep one’s partner keen in a relationship.
Psychologists from the University of Western Sydney and Singapore Management University analyzed 58 strategies used by women playing hard to get and discovered that the most successful tactics included appearing highly self-confident, talking to other people, withholding sex, sarcasm, sounding busy, teasing, flirting with others and turning down the first few dates.
The study asked more than 1,500 people to identify which strategies worked best to test their partner’s commitment.
The researchers concluded that women are more likely to play hard to get than men and that it was because women try to ensure their potential partner will stand by them once they have a child.
The results of the study were reported in the European Journal of Personality.

웨스턴시드니대학교와 싱가폴경영대학교 심리학자들은 여성들이 즐겨 사용하는 58가지의 ‘비싸게 굴기’ 전략들을 분석해 자신감 넘치는 모습 보여주기, 다른 사람과 대화하기, 성관계 미루기, 비꼬기, 바쁜 척하기, 애타게 하기, 연애 초반 데이트 거절하기 등이 가장 효과적인 전략으로 선정됐다.
이 연구에서는 총 1천5백명에게 연인의 애정 헌신도를 시험하기 위한 가장 좋은 전략은 무엇인지에 대해 질문하는 형식으로 우선 진행됐다.
연구진은 여성들이 남성들에 비해 ‘비싼 척하기’ 전략을 더 즐겨 사용하는 것으로 나타났으며 그 이유는 결혼 후 아이가 생겼을 때 남성 파트너가 자신의 옆에 머무를 것이라는 확신을 갖고 싶어하기 때문인 것이라는 결론을 내렸다.
