POSCO CEO Chung Joon-yang was elected as vice chairman of the World Steel Association, the international trade body for the iron and steel industry, POSCO said on Wednesday.

Chung’s appointment was made by members of the board in the 2012 WSA annual conference, which was held in New Delhi from Oct. 10-11.

Under the association’s rules, Chung automatically joined the three-member WSA chair group, which is composed of one chairman and two vice chairmen. The members of the chair group, each with three-year terms, rotate their roles every year, meaning Chung will lead the WSA as chairman next year, the company said.

The other two chair group members for 2012/2013 are Chairman Alexey Mordashov from Severstal in Russia and Vice Chairman Xiaogang Zhang of Anshan Iron & Steel Group Corporation in China.

The association represents approximately 170 steel producers and related organizations in the world. Its members are responsible for around 85 percent of world steel production.
