Gu Kailai “lookalike” took her place in court?

Gu Kailai, the wife of Chinese politician, Bo Xilai, was handed a suspended death sentence on Aug. 19 for the murder of Neil Heywood, a British businessman.

However, speculation on the Internet suggests that Gu employed a lookalike to take her place in court, according to news sources.

Gu, 53, appears plumper in images taken in the courtroom, which struck many as odd because most Chinese prisoners lose weight in jail. Two security experts knowledgeable about facial recognition software stated that the person in the courtroom footage was not Gu.

After the suggestion of a body double spread like wildfire, the Chinese state security blocked the term “body double” from being searched on the Internet.

If this allegation is true, it is possible that the real Gu struck a deal with the Communist Party chiefs.

Other claims being made by speculators are that the government used a stand-in for Gu because her appearance changed so much since she was taken into custody and that Gu’s bloated appearance is due to medication she is taking to treat her “mental state.”

'세기의 재판' 피고인, 사실 꼭닮은 가짜?

영국인 사업가 닐 헤이우드를 살해한 혐의로 사형을 선고 받았지만 형 집행은 유예된 보시라이(薄熙來) 전 중국 충칭시 당서기의 부인 구카이라이(谷開來)가 ‘대역’ 의혹에 휩싸였다. 법정 장면이 공개된 사진을 놓고 인터넷에서는 이목구비가 닮은 사람을 법정에 대신 세운 것이 아니냐는 의혹으로 떠들썩하다.

구카이라이(53)은 대부분의 중국 감옥 수감자들이 체중이 저하되는 것에 비해 더 살이 찐 모습으로 법정에 등장해 많은 사람들에게 의아함을 불러 일으켰다.

이에 안면 인식 프로그램에 정통한 보안 전문가 두 명은 법정 사진에서 보이는 사람은 구카이라이가 아니라고 진술했다.

이같이 대역 의혹이 들불처럼 번지자 중국 공안은 인터넷에서 “대역”이라는 단어를 검색할 수 없도록 만들었다.

만약 이 같은 의혹이 사실이라면 ‘진짜’ 구카이라이가 중국 공산당 간부들과 타협을 본 것이 아니냐는 설이 가능하다.

일각에서는 구카이라이가 수감된 후 우울증 등을 치료하기 위한 약물 복용 등으로 외형이 많이 변해 정부에서 대역을 세웠을 수도 있다는 관측을 내놨다.

구카이라이 사건은 일명 ‘보시라이 사건’으로 살인, 권력비리, 부정축재, 정치적 망명 등 온갖 스캔들을 수면 위로 떠올리며 천안문 사태 이후 중국 최대의 정치적 스캔들로 세간의 이목을 끌었다. 

한편 구카이라이의 사형이 유예되면서 일반 민중에게는 가혹한 중국 사법체계가 권력층에게는 한없이 관대하다는 누리꾼의 거센 비판이 있었다.
