Australia picks ambassadors for Expo

Korean-born fashion designer Bae Yeo-jin and swimmer Ian Thorpe hold up Australian and Korean flags in Sydney to celebrate becoming Australia’s Yeosu Expo ambassadors.

Australia has appointed two honorary ambassadors to promote its participation in the 2012 Yeosu Expo in Korea.

The Australian government held an event at the Sydney Opera House to appoint swimmer Ian Thorpe and Korean-born Australian fashion designer Bae Yeo-jin as honorary ambassadors for the international event to run from May 12 to Aug. 12 this year.

Bae kicked off her honorary ambassadorship by presenting awards to winners of a uniform design competition that had taken place in Sydney. Cherise Wakeley won the award for her design featuring a sea urchin motif. Judges said she gracefully portrayed the ocean’s harmony, which is the main theme of the Australian section’s display.

She won travel expenses to attend Yeosu and her work will be worn by staff in the Australian section of the 2012 Yeosu Expo.

Australia’s participation will be under the theme “In Harmony with the Ocean” at the event with an general theme of “The Living Ocean and Coast.”

“Australians are very pleased that Australia is taking part in the 2012 Yeosu Expo,” said Kevin Nixon, head of Australia’s Yeosu Expo 2012 secretariat.
