Korea’s National Pension Service said its chairman and CEO Jun Kwang-woo has received the 2011 “CEO of the Year in Asia” award from Asia Asset Management, a regional financial journal.
AAM annually selects top fund management companies and top executives who show noticeable performances in the field, and NPS said it is the first time that a Korean CEO has been honored in the Asia CEO category.

Jun is credited with helping the world’s fourth-largest pension fund to diversify its portfolio and expand its foreign investment since he took office in 2009.
NSP’s average return on investment reached 7.2 percent in the past three years, earning a total of 63 trillion won ($55.9 billion).
“The National Pension Service will continue to beef up its competitive edge by seeking new investment opportunities to become a leading player in the global market,” NPS quoted Jun as saying about the AAM award.
Jun was the chairman of the Financial Services Commission, the country’s financial regulator, between 2008 and 2009. He also worked at POSCO as chairman of the board of directors and Woori Financial Group as vice-chairman.
Before he took up positions in Korea, he worked for the World Bank for 12 years following a professorship at Michigan State University.
