South Korean entertainer Jang Geun-suk, who is especially popular among Japanese fans of the Korean Wave, has been named PR ambassador for the world’s largest nuclear security forum to be held in Seoul in March.

Jang will help promote the second Nuclear Security Summit, along with other goodwill ambassadors ― singer Lena Park, child actor Wang Suk-hyun and child actress Jin Ji-hee.

“Earlier this year, I felt deeply sad about the nuclear plant incident in Fukushima. It made me think how the world would suffer if there were a terrorist attack on a nuclear facility,” the 24-year-old actor said as he received a plaque from Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan.

“As my activities are in Japan, I will try hard to raise public awareness of the importance of nuclear security and safety of nuclear energy,” he said.

Kim said Jang’s global popularity will help both local and overseas fans learn more about the importance of the nuclear summit.

The Seoul nuclear summit on March 26-27 is expected to draw more than 50 heads of state and representatives of international organizations including the United Nations, IAEA, Interpol and the European Union.

The summit to be presided over by President Lee Myung-bak will focus on how to develop measures to prevent nuclear terrorism.
