A Korean American college student has joined a group of Libyan rebels for the last two months to fight against Gadhafi forces, according to reports.

According to the Christian Science Monitor, Chris Jeon, a math major at the University of California, Los Angeles, bought a one-way ticket to Cairo and entered Libya on foot without letting his parents know his plan.

“This is one of the few real revolutions,” Jeon was quoted as saying by CSM.
“I just thought I’d come check it out,” he added.

The 21-year-old student said he told his friends that he will take sick leave in order to join the rebel forces. He does not speak Arabic but talks to the rebels via sign language and some Italian.

He said the rebels have shown him hospitality and gave him the Arabic name: “Ahmed El Maghrabi Saidi Barga.”

At the rebel checkpoint about 80 miles from Sirte, Jeon held a Russian-made gun the rebels had given him but he didn’t appear to be using the weapon for killing, CSM reported.

The reports said that a rebel gave him an AK-47, and he awkwardly fired several rounds into the air.

Jeon told the CSM that he will go back to school before the fall semester begins.
