Obama summer reading list has drama, crime, epics

CHILMARK, Massachusetts (AP) _ A vacationing President Barack Obama seems to be in search of drama, passion and intrigue _ at least in his reading material.

The White House says Obama bought two books at a Martha's Vineyard shop on Friday and brought three others from Washington for his 10-day stay.

One new book is ``The Bayou Trilogy,'' a collection of cr ime novels by Daniel Woodrell set in Louisiana swampland. The other is ``Rodin's Debutante'' by Ward Just, a coming-of-age novel set in mid-20th-century Chicago.

He arrived with Abraham Verghese's ``Cutting for Stone,'' a novel about Ethiopian twins who journey to America; David Grossman's ``To the End of the Land,'' a turbulent family drama set in Israel; and ``The Warmth of Other Suns,'' an epic about America's great migration by Isabel Wilkerson.

(비니어드 헤이븐 AP·로이터=연합뉴스) 경제위기를 뒤로하고 열흘간의 여름휴가에 들어간 버락 오바마 미국 대통령이 소설을 읽으며 잠시나마 팍팍한 현실에서 벗어날 것으로 보인다.

백악관은 20일(현지시각) 동부의 휴양지 마서스 비니어드 섬으로 전날 휴가를 떠난 오바마 대통령이 휴가 때 읽을 책으로 소설 4권과 비소설 1권을 골랐다고 밝혔다.

휴가 첫날 마서스 비니어드 섬의 유명 서점인 '번치 오브 그레이프스'를 두 딸 말리아(13), 사샤(10)와 찾은 오바마 대통령은 이곳에서 소설 2권을 샀으며 나머지 3권은 워싱턴에서 가져왔다고 백악관은 전했다.

오바마 대통령이 휴가지에서 구입한 책은 루이지애나 주(州)의 늪지대를 배경으로 한 대니얼 우드럴의 추리소설 '베이유 3부작(Bayou Trilogy)'과 워드 저스트의 성장소설 '로딘의 데뷔(Rodin's Debutante)'다.

주인공이 시카고 남부 빈민가로 이주하고 나서 정치적으로 각성하는 과정을 그린 '로딘의 데뷔'는 오바마 대통령이 정계에 입문하기 전 시카고에서 지역 활동가로일하던 시절의 이야기와 비슷하다.

이외에 오바마 대통령은 이스라엘-팔레스타인 갈등을 주로 다루는 데이비드 그로스먼의 '땅끝까지(To the End of the Land)'와 머리가 붙은 채 태어난 에티오피아 샴쌍둥이의 미국 여행을 그린 에이브러햄 버기스의 '커팅 포 스톤(Cutting for Stone)'을 워싱턴에서 챙겨왔다.

그가 고른 단 한 권의 비소설은 미국 흑인들이 남부에서 다른 지역으로 이주한 과정을 추적한 이사벨 윌커슨의 '다른 태양의 따뜻함(The Warmth of Other Suns)'이다.
