After sex scandals that came to light in 2009, Tiger Woods lost many deals with companies such as Gillette, Gatorade and AT&T. But the 35-year-old golfer has returned to TV commercials as the spokesperson for a Japanese heat rub, according to reports.
Katsuhiro Kaji, spokesman for Kowa Co., that makes the Vantelin Kowa rub, said the firm offered a deal to Woods late last year. Kaji also said that the company did not think the athlete’s reputation put the heat rub therapy product in jeopardy.
Woods once signed a three-year deal with Asahi Soft Drink in 1997 to promote a coffee brand.
Many other celebrities have appeared in Japanese advertisements for financial gain.
In the 1980s “Rambo” star Sylvester Stallone starred in a packaged ham commercial. Arnold Schwarzenegger also endorsed on-the-go Cup o’ Noodles.
Woods lost an estimated $35 million a year in cancelled endorsement deals as a result of his scandal, according to Forbes. But he is still the world’s richest athlete with a $22-millon lead over basketball player Kobe Bryant.
Woods had to miss the U.S. Open due to injury, and he may not make the British Open July 14-17.
